Established in 1874, it is Switzerlands oldest and largest zoo (by
number of animals) and a major tourist attraction with nearly 1.7
million visitors per year.
The Zoo Basel is one of the leading zoos in the world. Among many
comparisons, Anthony Sheridan's (Zoological Society of London) study
in 2009 of 60 leading zoos, ranked the Zoo Basel as 7th best zoo in
Europe.

Tram line 2 (direction Binningen Kronenplatz) goes direclty from the
Swiss, French, and German train stations to Zoo Dorenbach — Zoo
Basel's South entrance.
Zoo Basel's children's zoo welcomed eight miniature piglets this week
or, as they call them, mini-schwein. While not exactly exotic, the
tiny piglets are the size of small puppies and have proven to be an
absolute delight for the Swiss children lucky enough to see them.
The new arrival at Switzerland's Zoo Basel is a rather animated baby
chimp.
