Twycross Zoo is a large zoo near the village of Twycross in
Leicestershire, close to the border of Warwickshire (on the A444 about
3 miles (4.8 km) off the A42/M42). The zoo was founded in 1963 by
Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans.
Twycross Zoo also holds a diverse collection of other animals, many of
them threatened species. They include the Amur leopard, the rarest big
cat in the world with only 30–40 animals left in the wild.
Twycross Zoo Association for 15 years, the original vet for over
thirty years and the first female President of the British Veterinary
Association - in recognition of her lifetime commitment to both
Twycross and animal welfare.

I recently visited Twycross Zoo in Atherstone, Warwickshire, to see
what animals are ket at the zoo, and how they are taken care of. I was
thrilled to find such an excellent facility with plenty to see.
The founding philosophy of Twycross Zoo is ultimately to provide the
best possible enriching environment for the animals. The welfare and
harmony of the animals is the primary concern and purpose for staff at
the Zoo.
Twycross Zoo will open a section of the Zoo to the public on
the evening of Saturday 30th August 2008, from 6.30 pm until 10.00 pm.
Twycross Zoo East Midland Zoological Society is a registered charity
(No 501841) and aims to “care for our world’s animals and environments
through conservation, communication and integrity”
Twycross Zoo is the world’s most comprehensive collection of primate
species.

Twycross Zoo is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos
and Aquariums (BIAZA), the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(WAZA) and Wildlife Information Network (WIN).

It's a hidden gem: a chimpanzee field researcher told me that the zoo
was worth a trip; otherwise I would never have heard of it.
The Twycross Zoo website has perfectly good travel directions by road,

and tour busses.
Twycross Zoo also holds collections of many other animals, most of
them endangered, they include the rarest Big Cat in the world, the

140+ in captivity, and recently had 2 rare male twin Leopards
Twycross Zoo: my only previous visit had been many years ago when only
a small child, so my memories were hazy to say the least.
Today Twycross Zoo is an internationally important centre for the
breeding of primates. Very few zoos, anywhere in the world, have the
experience that Twycross has with so many monkeys and apes.
Kim Riley, of Twycross Zoo, said: “Joe was a founder member of
Twycross Zoo and was the first of many gorillas in the era when it was
still common for lions, tigers, bears and great apes to be on sale in
pet shops.

Personnel at Twycross Zoo are responsible for the Chimpanzee studbook
in the United Kingdom, the European studbooks for Red Fronted Macaws
and Patagonian Sealions.
Twycross Zoo has helped in rehabilitation programmes for orphaned
gibbons in Asia and with a Sumatran Orangutan rehabilitation project.
Zoos can provide useful research on a range of subjects including
nutrition, interactions with the environment, reproductive biology,
epidemiology, physiology and endocrinology.
