75 miles (120 km) west of Raleigh, North Carolina in the United States.
At 1,458 acres (5.90 km2) , it is the largest walk-through
natural-habitat zoo.
The North Carolina Zoo is the nation’s first
state-supported zoo and remains one of only two state zoos (the other
state being Minnesota). The NC Zoo has a variety of different animals
whose habitats range from Africa to North America.
The North Carolina Zoo is a Zoological Park consisting of two areas: "Africa"
and "North America". The 37-acre (150,000 m²) African Plains exhibit
alone is as large as many entire zoos. Popular exhibits include the
polar bear, RJ Reynolds Forest Aviary, and Watani Grasslands Reserve.
Located just south of Asheboro, the North Carolina Zoo is seated on a
1,500 tract of land in the Uwharrie Mountains. Approximately 500 acres
of this property have been developed into one of the largest "natural
habitat" zoos in the United States.
