National Zoo, is a zoo located in Washington, D.C. It is accredited by
the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Founded in 1889, it
consists of two distinct installations: a 163 acre (0.7 km²) zoo
within the Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C.
The National Zoo, as part of the Smithsonian
Institution, receives federal appropriations for operating expenses.
The zoo’s support society, Friends of the National Zoo, provides
support with private funds.
The National Zoo was founded by famed naturalist and American
conservation leader William T. Hornaday. Hornaday, serving as a
taxidermist for the Smithsonian Institution, became increasingly
concerned over the decline of many native American species, most
notably the American bison.

The National Zoo is a part of the Smithsonian Institution and
admission is FREE! (There is a fee however, for parking in Zoo lots.)
To see all of the animals and exhibits at the National Zoo takes
several hours.
Visiting the National Zoo involves a lot of walking. You should dress
appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. To avoid
crowds, arrive early in the day or after 2 p.m.
The National Zoological Park was planned by F.L. Olmstead & Co.
National Zoo preceded the founding of the New York Zoological Park and
Munich's Hellabrun Zoo, and thus may have been the first major zoo to
be located in a spacious, landscaped setting.

The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (also informally known
as The Pretoria Zoo) is the national zoo of South Africa. It is
situated in the city of Pretoria and was founded by J. W. B. Gunning.
The National Zoo is a large zoo in Washington, D.C., that is part of
the Smithsonian Institute. The zoo covers over 160 acres and is
situated within the Rock Creek National Park. You will find over 2,000
animals in the zoo.
