zoo, but the number of exhibits and variety of animals has expanded.
The star, overlook, and zoo are accessible both from Roanoke and from
a spur of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Roanoke Mountain.
The Mill Mountain Zoo is a zoo located atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke,
Virginia. Originally opening in 1952, the zoo was operated by the City
of Roanoke for its first 24 years of existence. In 1976, the city
turned its operation over to the Roanoke Jaycees.

Mill Mountain Zoo has been growing ever since with the regular
addition of new exhibits as well as the updating of current exhibits.
The zoo is very concerned with conservation and with protecting
endangered species.
Mill Mountain Zoo has the distinction of being one of only two zoos in
the United States to have a Corsac Fox (the other is the San Diego
Zoo).

and activities that allow the Macaques to exercise both their bodies
and their minds. Visitors can watch the feeding of the Japanese
Macaques each day at 2:30.

We visited the Mill Mountain Zoo for a special occasion: Christmas
Lights. This event started at 5:00 pm. By the time we arrived it
became dark. The admission officer gave us special glasses to look at
the lights outside.

The Mill Mountain Zoo is great, except for one tiny thing. The snake
exhibit is right in the middle and you must pass it. Personally, I am
horrified of snakes, so I never make it too far in.
