Mujahedin from all factions were known to treat some of the zoo�s
animals, especially deer, as a ready source of food.
The plight of the Kabul Zoo animals was brought to media attention by
the WSPA, a UK-based charity that works to protect animal welfare in
regions of the world where little or no such protection exists.
Kabul Zoo in Afghanistan has long had a reputation for poor treatment
of animals.
Kabul Zoo, this is not welcome news. We have made some progress in
providing properly for the animals that have survived the war, but the
Kabul Zoo is in no condition whatever to take on additional animals.
Today, the number of species at the Kabul zoo has been halved to 19,
including a handful of wolves, monkeys, and a lion that was blinded in
one eye when an Afghan guerrilla threw a grenade into its cage.
