The Gladys Porter Zoo was innovative for its time and continues to be a world-class facility. In fact, the architectural concept of the naturalistic exhibits won the 1979 Texas Building Branch of Associated General Contractors Outstanding Construction Award.
Farst came to the Gladys Porter Zoo in 1970 from the Columbus Zoological Gardens in Columbus, Ohio. Today, he remains the Zoo's director. Inspired by the nation's Energy Crisis, the Adopt-an-Animal program initiated in 1974.
Brownsville, the Gladys Porter Zoo has long been recognized as one of the nation's best zoos. The zoo, which covers 26 acres and includes over 1,300 animals, attracts close to 400,000 visitors to South Texas on an annual basis.
Gladys Porter Zoo is within easy driving distance of the state's most popular beach resort, South Padre Island, and is opened 365 days a year. Operating hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
