The Belgrade Zoo situation
-
When i was a kid, i liked going to the Belgrade Zoo (especially the
snake house, of course).
state the Belgrade Zoo is in, and the inappropriate conditions of the
animal habitats there, both from people who visited the zoo and from
media. When the state itself is in lot of financial trouble, one can
not expect the Zoo to function normally i guess.
Belgrade Zoo is not a member of any global Zoo association, such as
WAZA (Palic Zoo is there, though) or EAZA.
Belgrade Zoo is built in 1936. and is one of the oldest in Europe.
Belgrade Zoo is located on Kalemegdan, the most ancient (from Roman
through Turkish times) part of Belgrade. The zoo is small, and most of
it is on stone and concrete.
The Belgrade Zoo is better called a 'menagerie' than a Zoo. It is an
old-style city zoo, where the main goal is entertainment, while
conservation and education play small or no role.
After decades of neglect, Belgrade Zoo got a new Director in the
mid-eighties: Vuk Bojovic. The relationship between the citizens of
Belgrade and Vuk is quite schizophrenic - some love him, some hate
him, but most have a strange love-hate relationship with him.
Belgrade Zoo houses over 2000 animals in small cramped concrete cages.
Many of these animals show signs of 'stereotypic behavior' which is
common in animals that exist in cages without anything to stimulate
the animals mind. Grass for visitors, concrete for animals.
Belgrade Zoo that are appearing on the Internet. We urge the Mayor of
Belgrade to instruct the zoo director, Mr Vukosav Bojovic, to seek
help from the International Animal Conservation community in making
Belgrade Zoo a more animal friendly place.

Animals in Belgrade Zoo live in bare enclosures and undoubtedly, years
of depravity, lack of stimulation and being confined to too small
concrete cages have resulted in stereotypical behavior witch is
displayed by these severely distressed Animals.
The Belgrade Zoo, or the Good Hope Garden, stands on one of the most
attractive city locations - the Kalemegdan park. It was founded in
1936 and it is one of the oldest homes of animal kingdom in Europe.
The Belgrade Zoo has
become one of the best arranged parts of Belgrade, a real oasis of
beauty amidst a great city. The Belgrade Zoo works all 365 days of the
year.

“Don’t zoos help preserve endangered species?”
Most animals in zoos are not endangered or being prepared for release
into natural habitats.

Bojovic, the zoo director, ordered me to keep her presence a secret
and not to mention that she was an orangutan.

BELGRADE (AFP) — Staff at Belgrade Zoo showed off two white lion cubs
to the public on Sunday, the first of their rare species to be born
here.
Two white lion cubs have been born at Belgrade Zoo in Serbia, the
first to be born there. Unique to South Africa, and almost extinct due
to hunting, white lions are extremely rare. They are now bred in zoos
around the world.
Belgrade zoo favorite, making his way into various city urban legends.
Here’s what I managed to find about him and his escapes on the net.
The Belgrade Zoo is located within the ancient Kalemegdan fortress in
the city center.
A restaurant is located just above the zoo, and thousands have visited
the fortress this week for a beer festival.
* Belgrade Zoo is not a member of any global Zoo association.
* 20 hectares is a minimum for a zoo (european standards)
* Belgrade zoo only about 6 hectares.
Belgrade Zoo is one of the worst zoos in the world and has been
condemned for many years by every international zoo inspection body
...
Most animals, like those in Belgrade Zoo, are used purely in the name
of entertainment and do not benefit the animal in any way. The
conditions in Belgrade Zoo are simply atrocious. The cages and
enclosures fall way short of an acceptable standard (if there is such
a standard!).
and the Belgrade Zoo is a bad zoo, made worse by the evident
management neglect of opportunities to improve.
