Auckland Zoo has New Zealand's largest collection of animals and is
recognised as one of the most progressive zoos in the world. A winner
of national and international environmental-related awards, it is home
to 135 different species and over 770 animals.
Auckland Zoo is the main zoological garden of Auckland, New Zealand,
situated next to Western Springs park not far from Auckland's central
business district. It is run by the Auckland City Council with the
Auckland Zoological Society as a supporting organisation.
Auckland Zoo opened in 1922 experiencing early difficulties mainly due
to animal health issues. By 1930 a sizeable collection of animals had
been assembled and a zoological society formed.
On 17 July 1929 the formation of the Auckland Zoological Society was
announced whose main purpose was to encourage scientific study.

Auckland Zoo is a good size, with a wide range of animals to see.
Auckland Zoo may be small but it is perfectly formed. It's a real
pleasure to walk around with lots of native trees and plants along
with all the usual animals you would expect to see with the added
bonus of tiger cubs.
I booked the African Experience at Auckland Zoo and it was great, well
worth the money. You get within 30cm of the Lions, admittedly behind a
wire fence. You also get to feed a hippo and giraffe and you get a
good behind the scenes view of the zoo.
Had been warned that Auckland Zoo was fairly average, but thought we
would judge for ourselves. We visited the zoo during the school
holidays, so expected it to be busy, but were horrified by the queue.

especially because of the very impressive and friendly layout. It is
also a wonderful opportunity to see native species as well as exotic

Auckland Zoo has focused on providing its animals with the most
natural habitats possible. Since the 1990s, this zoo has taken care of
the breeding and conservation as well.
There's a good reason to visit the Auckland Zoo this month - actually,
there are three good reasons. They are Jalur, Berani, and Cinta, the
three Sumatran tiger cubs that were born in the Zoo on June 12th and
