as the Akron Children's Zoo, is a small, family-friendly park, located
just west of downtown Akron. The 50-acre zoo is home to over 700
animals, including the endangered Humboldt penguins, jaguar, and the
elusive snow leopard.
Exhibits at the Akron Zoo include the new "Legends of the Wild", a
natural habitat featuring 380 animals, including the Andean condor,
the snow leopard, and the jaguar.
The 50-acre Akron Zoo sits on land donated to the city in 1900 by
George and Ann Perkins, heirs of the city's founder. The zoo started
out as the Akron Children's Zoo in 1953 with Mother Goose-themed
exhibits using live animals.

WEST AKRON — Big changes are coming to the Akron Zoo this year.
According to Akron Zoo officials, the zoo will acquire at least seven
new animals — three tigers, a snow leopard, a red panda and, for the
first time, sloth bears, one of which is shown at right.
This is the second time in recent history the Akron Zoo has had jaguar
cubs born at the zoo by Naom and Chack. The other cubs, all females,
were born in 2005 and have since been moved to other accredited zoos
in the country.
WEST AKRON — The Akron Zoo announced the birth of three endangered
jaguar cubs born at the zoo March 3.
All three cubs, shown at right — two females and one male — and their
mother, Naom, are doing well, according to zoo officials.
The Akron Zoo is holding a contest to help name its newest additions.

Planet'' in conjunction with its Earth Day celebration April 25.

summer. The zoo’s female snow leopard, Hannah, which had been at the

The Akron Zoo, which is home to over 700 animals from around the
world, is open 361 days a year. Hours are 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and
admission is $6 per person. Children under two are free and parking is
$2.
The Akron Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(AZA).
AKRON - The Akron Zoo has announced the death of a female Sumatran
tiger at the zoo.
Zoo officials say the 17-year-old tiger, Aneh, was humanely euthanized
due to a marked worsening of her severe chronic renal failure.
The Akron Zoo has two male tigers, Binjai and Rojo which will remain
on exhibit.
There are currently about 55 Sumatran tigers being held in U.S. zoos.
